Immigration and Citizenship

On this page are passage purchase records, passenger records, etc related to the voyage taken by Simon and later Jacob Lemanowitz to the US in the late 1800's. In order to understand more about the reasons for the different spellings, etc, and to better understand what's here, it would be helpful to read the page, History (part 1). On that page (as well as others, I make reference to a few of the “Shtetls” where the family may have lived in Lithuania or Russia (depending on who was ruling the area at a point in time) prior to their journey to America. I've put a couple of maps on this page to give you a frame of reference. As I mentioned on that history page, stopping by the sites for Vilna, Oshmana, Oshmany, as well as Kelme (where Fannie may have been from), and Wisnowitz (in the Ukraine), perhaps where Simon was from. The sites are filled with amazing history about the history of these shtetls.

I have also included on this page documents such as Naturalization Petitions and Citizenship Certificates that I have been able to find.

If you are interested in any of them in particular, I am happy to send you (via email) a copy of the document in a size and format that is more easily read or printed.

Use the "Navigation Menu" at the top of each page to advance  from page to page. To see each sister's "tribute" page, either click on "Sisters" in the Navigation Menu, or use the drop-down menu under "Sisters."  You can view the picture thumbnails within each gallery as a slideshow by clicking on the thumbnail of any picture. The slideshow will soon start and advance on it's own. While in a slideshow, at the menu on the top of the screen on the right, you'll be able to pause the slideshow to view a picture longer, end the slideshow (select "x") and download pictures with the appropriate download icon. You can go forward or go backwards at your own pace with the arrows on the far right and left of each picture.
